AWeber Email Marketing Review: 20 Years of Easy-to-Use Features

This AWeber Email Marketing Review aims to give you a complete and honest overview of the platform. It should give you the knowledge you need to decide if AWeber is something for you or not.

Of all of the tools in the marketing toolbox, email marketing is one of the most effective. Email marketing is one of the best ways of reaching out to the people who would benefit most from what your business has to offer. Thankfully, there are several email marketing tools available to simplify the process without compromising quality. Of these tools, the AWeber email marketing platform has remained one of my favourites.

If you are an aspiring marketer in need of an easy-to-use email marketing platform, I’m here to offer my two cents. I hope that by the end of this review, you will feel more comfortable navigating the email marketing sphere when selecting the best platform for you.

Let’s get to it!

What is the AWeber Autoresponder?

Since 1998, email marketers have regarded AWeber as one of the best (if not the best) platforms available. The email marketing platform earned its place as one of the leading marketing automation solutions by simplifying the process with a variety of useful features and attentive customer support.

The AWeber Autoresponder was designed with small businesses in mind, and even as the email marketing industry became ripe with competitors, this remained its central focus. With frequent updates, AWeber has consistently offered new ways of crafting email campaigns that turn website visitors into long-standing clients.

Now that you have a basic idea of what AWeber is let’s get into specifics. You’ll have all the information you need to determine whether or not AWeber is the right choice for you.

In my own experience with AWeber, I was pleasantly surprised to find that all users are granted access, to every impressive feature the platform has to offer. That is regardless of their chosen plan (more on that later). That gave me the ability to put the complete platform to the test. By the time I considered myself well-acquainted with AWeber, I felt confident that I’d made the right choice in selecting a marketing tool. I knew that it would give my email marketing efforts the boost they needed.

Drag and Drop Campaign Editor

If you’re an aspiring marketer with little to no experience with coding, I’m going to need your attention here. What could be more simple than a campaign manager that features a drag and drop editor? I certainly couldn’t think of a more natural alternative during my time with AWeber’s campaign management features. Regardless of the campaign type that I was setting up, AWeber’s campaign editor made it easy. I could create and test my messages by dragging and dropping elements.

All in all, it took very little time for me to get accustomed to the way the campaign editor worked. While it varies widely from some of AWeber’s most popular competitors in terms of functionality, I found it to be an easy enough learning process. Once you get a handle on things, you’ll be cranking out campaigns effortlessly- saving yourself valuable time. With my busy schedule, this was particularly refreshing.

I am incredibly pleased with AWeber’s drag and drop campaign editor. I’ll be the first to admit, though, that not everything about the platform’s design editing is flawless. Although AWeber has made apparent efforts to consistently update their features and grow with the ever-changing email marketing industry, some templates feature noticeably outdated designs. While these particular templates were new and innovative at the time of AWeber’s inception, they don’t necessarily stand up to the competition.

With that being said, AWeber does one thing very right in terms of their selection of templates, and that is sheer quantity. While similar email marketing platforms offer a limited range of 50-150 templates, AWeber gives you access to an impressive 700 templates. While some of the platform’s templates are less than satisfactory, there are a far greater number of modern, eye-catching designs from which to choose.

Best of all, AWeber features customizable templates that you can personalize to best represent your brand. Email marketing is one of the best ways to increase brand awareness (if implemented properly), and you can develop these customizable templates to your exact specifications. To further simplify the process, you can personalize any of AWeber’s existing templates to fit your taste. Just change the general layout and colour scheme to match your brand. I utilized this feature often and was impressed with just how much time it saved me when setting up my email marketing campaigns.

Automated Campaigns

I was also able to set up my automated campaigns and schedule them to be deployed at a later time of my choosing. While this isn’t an uncommon feature among email marketing platforms, I was happy to see it included. Automated campaigns are, after all, one of the best ways to monitor user actions. You can use these observations to determine who should receive what and at what time- further strengthening your email marketing efforts.

In an industry where organization is key to efficient email marketing efforts, AWeber makes sure to include the necessities. The automated-campaigns feature will allow you to create comprehensive campaign autoresponder flowcharts. Those can be used to organize emails depending on crucial factors like website-visits, email-opens, purchases-made, and more.

RSS To Email Templates

You can leverage the RSS feed of your website’s blog content (Make sure you have an RSS feed!). AWeber provides an RSS-to-email-template feature. You can set it up to quickly convert your feed into e-newsletters. You can schedule those at any frequency of your choosing. That is an incredibly useful feature that can support your efforts to build a mailing list based on your blog’s subscribers.

The only downside here is that AWeber limits this function to a predetermined list of specified templates. That means fewer personalization options at your disposal and, unfortunately, you can’t use AWeber’s handy drag and drop interface to edit. Given a little bit of time, you’re likely to find a template that suits your needs well enough. However, to provide you with an unbiased AWeber Email Marketing Review, it’s something of which I had to take note.

Split Testing

Split testing is one of the best ways to test different versions of your emails to determine which is preferred by your targeted audience. The email marketing industry is built on the foundation of learning what your targeted audience wants to see and split testing offers valuable insight into the mind of your consumer.

I was able to run a series of split tests with AWeber in a process that was fully automated and simple. All I had to do was create the different versions of the email I wanted to test, feed the data into AWeber, and let the platform do the hard work. AWeber was able to accurately interpret my sample data to identify the best version and sent it out to my mailing list. Without an automated email marketing tool like AWeber to assist me with my split testing efforts, I would have been in for a severe headache.

I was particularly impressed with the number of variants that the platform allows you to test at one time. AWeber Supports up to three variants within a single split test. Therefore AWeber enabled me to optimize my split testing efforts, whereas some of the most popular competitors had limited me to only two options at once.

The final key feature that I felt necessary to highlight is AWeber’s integrations with third-party apps. That is where you can make particular use of combining your global marketing efforts. There are hundreds of supported third-party app integrations. They range from website builders like WordPress and CRM tools like Salesforce. There’s something for any aspiring marketer to add to their arsenal.

This third-party app support opens up whole new possibilities when it comes to plugging in contacts from other platforms. E-commerce marketers can enjoy seamless support for the apps they use most. I am talking about PayPal to the world’s most popular e-commerce platforms like WooCommerce and Shopify. I’m not ashamed to admit that I found myself having fun browsing through AWeber’s vast collection of supported third-party apps. Just when I felt sure I’d thought of an app that wouldn’t be supported through a plug-in or sync tool, AWeber proved me wrong.

AWeber Customer Support

As impressed as I was with AWeber’s vast array of features, I was even more impressed with AWeber customer support. Through the grapevine, I heard talk that this particular email marketing platform offered the best customer support in the industry. It took experiencing it for myself to truly appreciate the value. People often overlook the importance of adequate customer support when it comes to marketing tools. I’ve dealt with my fair share of flawed customer service during my time in the industry. The experience I had with AWeber was nothing short of a breath of fresh air.

In the rare occurrence of an issue, AWeber customer support was there to help me. With phone, email, and live chat support available for customers, AWeber stands out from the competition in a big way. Even the most popular email marketing platforms will make their customers jump through a series of hoops before they can have their issues addressed. And most offer email or live chat support only. It is something that those new to marketing will find essential as they learn to navigate the sometimes complicated world of email marketing. Any extra help that a novice marketer can be given in the beginning is, frankly, priceless.

Plans and Pricing

So how much will the AWeber email marketing platform cost you? I’m glad you asked. Plans and pricing are essential things to consider when selecting any marketing tool. If you’re doing your due research while shopping around for the best email marketing tool for you, plans and pricing can be a determining factor. As stated, AWeber won’t limit you in terms of features (including their unrivalled customer support) regardless of which plan you select- so what’s the catch? Let’s break it down.

Fortunately, AWeber has a total of 5 different plans available to fit nearly any marketing budget. The platform’s pricing structure uniquely focuses on how many email subscribers you’d like to be able to support rather than features. Here’s what you can expect from each plan:

  • $19 per month will support a hosting and mailing list of up to 500 subscribers
  • $29 per month will support 501-2,500 subscribers
  • $49 per month will support 2,501-5,000 subscribers
  • $69 per month will support 5,001-10,000 subscribers
  • $149 per month will support 10,001 to 25,000 subscribers

If your mailing list extends beyond 25,000 subscribers, you will need to contact AWeber directly to get a quote. These five packages will fit the needs of most small businesses, the focus of AWeber’s design.

Alternatives to AWeber Email Marketing

If you classify yourself as a novice marketer. Or you are someone who is sick of paying premium prices to access the “premium features” you need to strengthen your email marketing efforts. AWeber might be for you.

At the same time, there are specific functionality issues (highlighted throughout this AWeber Email Marketing Review). Those may leave you sceptical of how well AWeber will work for you at these current price points. While I have enjoyed my experience with AWeber overall, this is a valid point, and I would encourage you to explore all of the options available to you. If you’re still not sure whether AWeber is the best choice for you, here are a few alternatives to consider.

Starting at $29 per month for 1,000 subscribers, ConvertKit excels in areas like segmentation and automation. While AWeber is still catching up in terms of certain functionalities, ConvertKit is a more modern alternative best fit for membership sites, for example. It also offers integration of third-party apps, similarly to AWeber.

GetResponse offers a free 30-day trial of their email marketing services. There is no need for your credit card information. That could be particularly attractive to those just getting started with email marketing. GetResponse has also focused their efforts on developing templates optimized for mobile use with several mobile apps available for use right off the bat.

Drip is one of the newer email marketing platforms on the scene. It has risen in popularity as of late due to its use of some of the best marketing automation features available today. The downside is that, in terms of pricing, Drip doesn’t offer quite as much flexibility as the more popular competitors. With three plans available, Drip will cost you $49, $99, or $149 per month depending on how many subscribers you’ll need to support.

MailChimp is one of the biggest names in the email marketing industry after AWeber. MailChimp may be one of the top platforms to consider for new email marketers in particular as it offers a free account for mailing lists of 2,000 subscribers. Unfortunately, MailChimp’s free plan will limit you to a total of 6 emails per month. If you’re new to the industry and looking to get your feet wet in the most cost-effective way possible, you may want to consider MailChimp. Due to the limitations set on the free plan, however, you’ll likely want to consider one of its paid plans before too long. These plans come priced at $10, $15, $20, and $25 per month.

I hope you enjoyed this AWeber Email Marketing Review. As you can clearly tell, I am an avid user of the platform and I will not be tempted to change to any of the other platforms out there. AWeber, for me, is the best choise available.

I never knew AWeber gives access to an impressive 700 templates for any plan. I think I’ve been missing out on a lot by not employing this email platform to handle my email campaigns. What you’ve been saying makes sense and I’m going to consider giving it a try. The one I presently use is not easy to navigate and the plans are also high.

Exactly. AWeber features a lot of customizable templates that one can personalize to best represent a brand. The good thing is that you will always find one that suits your business needs. It may need a little tweaking but in the end, the results will be amazing.

It’s quite splendid that all users are granted access to every impressive feature the platform has to offer regardless of their chosen plan. I think the only difference is the email list size you can add. The amazing features you find in a high plan, the same you’ll find in others. This will benefit small owners because they will not have to spend much until they have successfully expanded. The friendliness of the platform makes it a more acceptable form as others are either difficult or a bit on the high side.

Agreed. AWeber’s campaign editor is super easy with its drag and drop feature that allows you to create and test messages by dragging and dropping elements. It is super simple and even if you want to add a bit of code to further have control over it, you can do that with no hassle. I just love it!

Email marketing has always been one of the most effective marketing strategy of reaching out to the people who would benefit most from what you offer. I’ve tried a few of the email marketing platforms like GetResponse and mail chimp. Right now I’m still working on mailchimp as it gives a large email subscription list for free members. It’s really amazing because it will go a long way to help those of us looking to cut down on budgets.
